Description

Cat Watching a Spider by Ōide Tōkō captures the instant before a small domestic drama unfolds. A cat peers around the edge of a screen, its eyes fixed on a spider across the open floor. The bright patterned cloth around its neck offers a playful accent against the subdued colors of the room.

Made around 1888–92 in ink and color on silk, this album leaf uses empty space to sharpen the encounter. The screen’s straight edges contrast with the cat’s rounded body, and the tiny spider becomes the focus of an otherwise quiet composition. Fine whiskers, alert ears and carefully placed paws make the animal’s curiosity easy to recognize.

Held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cat Watching a Spider turns a fleeting observation into a gently humorous scene. Its charm rests in the scale of the encounter and the attention given to an ordinary moment.
