Description

Four-Master and Two Three-Masters presents three substantial sailing vessels beside a fortified island: one has four masts and the other two have three. Their rigging, flags and crowded decks form intricate patterns against the harbor and clouded sky. Executed by Frans Huys after a design by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, this print combines engraving and etching. It belongs to The Sailing Vessels, a series exploring the construction and character of different ships.

The Met dates the print to 1561–65. A lighthouse crowns the island, giving the vessels a fixed point amid the open water. The composition makes maritime engineering visually absorbing, balancing the ships’ imposing hulls with the delicacy of their ropes and spars. The scene also recalls Antwerp’s close relationship with seaborne trade, presenting ships as complex human creations rather than merely distant additions to a landscape.
