Description

Simon Butler, from Indian Trails, presents a wooded landscape occupied by figures and horses rather than the French agricultural scenes more often associated with Jean-François Millet. Rocky ground and forest vegetation organize the group within a setting that feels dense and enclosed. The lithograph’s tonal plate gives broad passages of shade a presence alongside the more precise marks describing figures and terrain.

Published in 1852, the print is currently attributed to Millet by the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Karl Bodmer is recorded as a former attribution. Its American subject makes it an unusual encounter within Millet’s work. Rather than treating the title as a simple portrait label, the scene invites attention to the relationship between its gathering of people, their horses, and the surrounding wilderness.
