Description

The Wool Carder depicts a woman seated indoors working wool near her lap, with a basket visible at the lower left. Millet gives the practical task a close setting, letting the hands, material and seated figure belong to the same compact arrangement. The basket extends the work into the surrounding space without distracting from the person occupied at the center.

Made about 1855–1856, the work is an etching on laid paper in its only recorded state. Its modest subject invites attention to the connection between human effort and a material being prepared for use. Millet makes that relationship substantial enough to sustain the sheet, allowing an ordinary task to carry both form and meaning. The image’s appeal lies in treating preparation as worthy of looking, preserving a kind of labor that can otherwise disappear behind the objects it helps produce.
