Description
A Dutch Hulk and a Boeier brings a tall cargo ship close to the viewer, its rounded sails swelling above the hull. Flags rise among the masts, while the smaller boeier appears farther right near the harbor. Waves and darker clouds give the vessels an active setting. Their differing sizes and structures create a comparison that is visual as well as practical, making ships the composition’s principal subjects.
The 1565 engraving belongs to The Sailing Vessels and carries Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s design into the collaborative printmaking world of Frans Huys, Cornelis Cort and publisher Hieronymus Cock. Its detailed line makes construction part of the ships’ appeal, distinguishing the rigging from the swelling forms of the sails. Close maritime observation meets the pleasure of an expansive sea view. The result gives each craft a presence that is both intricate and substantial.
