Description
In You will not escape, a woman is surrounded by flying, batlike creatures, their activity making the space around her feel increasingly difficult to escape. Francisco Goya’s You Will Not Escape turns a prediction into an immediate visual pressure. The figure’s human presence remains distinct within a world whose movement seems directed toward containing her.
Plate 72 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, uses etching and burnished aquatint to join bodily vulnerability to supernatural menace. Goya leaves the creatures’ exact significance open, allowing pursuit and entrapment to carry the emotional meaning. The title removes the reassurance of a possible exit. The image’s fascination lies in that narrowing freedom, where an individual is made conspicuous by the forces around her and the surrounding darkness becomes an active part of the encounter.
