Description
Francisco Goya’s These Too moves among wounded men in a makeshift hospital setting. A seated figure attends to an injury in the foreground, while a bandaged patient lies behind him and others are carried or treated farther away. Light falls from above into the crowded interior. Individual acts of care coexist with the unsettling presence of a body that can no longer be helped.
Plate 25 of The Disasters of War extends the series’ examination of assistance under wartime conditions. Its brief title connects these patients to other casualties rather than granting them an escape from the cycle of suffering. Goya makes the room feel inhabited by distinct, exhausted people, using tonal contrast to separate them without relieving the pressure of the group. Recovery appears uncertain, and the ordinary work of care remains inseparable from war’s continuing demands.
