Description
Majas on a Balcony brings two elegantly dressed women close to the viewer, their pale gowns and lace mantillas glowing against a shadowed setting. In this work associated with Francisco de Goya, the balcony rail divides the picture while linking the women through their leaning poses and gently tilted heads.
Behind them, two cloaked figures create a striking contrast of light and dark. The women’s bright clothing and open expressions draw the eye first, but the obscured faces at the back lend the gathering a more elusive mood. Repeated vertical bars and sweeping fabric folds give the compact scene a strong visual rhythm.
