Description
A road winds across stormy mountain heath in Hind Head Hill, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Robert Dunkarton. A flock occupies the foreground beneath broad, unsettled clouds. Light breaks through above the rising ground, drawing the eye beyond the nearby animals and making the passage across exposed terrain feel both ordinary and dramatic.
Published on January 1, 1811, the print combines etching, mezzotint and drypoint and belongs to Liber Studiorum. Its worked surface gives the route a material presence distinct from a unique painting. The design’s interest lies in the relationship between a particular hill and the road associated with it, where ordinary travel can contribute to landscape’s character. A named place becomes an encounter through its terrain and the human connections suggested by a route across it.
