Description
A low bridge crosses the middle of Bridge and Goats, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Frederick Christian Lewis. Goats and figures occupy the foreground, beneath leafy trees crowding the right side. Distant buildings appear at the left, giving the intimate gathering a wider setting and balancing nearby animal life with the architecture beyond.
Published on April 23, 1812, the print combines etching, aquatint and mezzotint and belongs to Liber Studiorum. The varied processes give the scene a material presence through line and tone rather than the full color of a painting. Its interest lies in the coexistence of different forms within a shared landscape. A practical crossing can remain engaging beside modest animal life, making the place feel particular through relationships rather than a grand narrative occasion.
