Description
Chain of Alps from Grenoble to Chamberi stretches layered peaks across a broad valley in a landscape designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by William Say. Shafts of brightness emerge through the central clouds, while people and an animal follow the road below. Their small scale makes the mountains feel immense without leaving the view entirely beyond human experience.
Published on May 23, 1812, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. Its linear and tonal surface gives the mountain landscape a material character distinct from a unique watercolor. Turner’s design and Say’s engraving bring an expansive subject into a form suited to close looking. The image’s interest lies in that meeting of scales, where a modest sheet can offer an encounter with great distance and elevation without diminishing the particular forms through which the view is established.
