Description

A sheer crag rises at the left of Turner’s Ben Arthur, facing a sweeping dark slope on the right. Clouds extend above the mountain enclosure, while the lower valley gives the great forms a space between them. The arrangement makes the Scottish landscape imposing through the relation of its parts, with the opposing slopes drawing attention toward the terrain they frame.

Published on January 1, 1819, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with Thomas Goff Lupton responsible for engraving. This is the second of three states. The division of work brings the mountain’s established outlines together with a developed tonal surface. Its interest lies in translating the scale of a Scottish prospect into a compact graphic field, allowing distance and natural mass to become matters of close looking.
