Description
The Beast with Seven Heads and the Beast with Lamb’s Horns brings fantastic creatures before a kneeling crowd beneath a heavenly assembly in this scene from The Apocalypse. The many-headed creature fills the lower space, while figures above appear amid clouds and radiant light. The differing registers bring opposing kinds of authority into one view, setting the people on the ground between monstrous power and the vision overhead.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes the strange subject vivid through tightly organized detail. Heads, horns and curling clouds create repeated patterns without losing the figures’ individual gestures. The contrast between the bright upper realm and the crowded lower scene gives the image its dramatic scale, inviting attention to both the fantastic creatures and the human responses gathered beneath them.
