Description

In Loyalty, from Francisco de Goya’s Disparates, a group of oddly dressed figures gathers beneath a broad expanse of darkness. Some lean toward one another while others stretch or raise their arms, producing a scene of restless, uncertain interaction. Pale faces and garments emerge from the shadow without resolving the gathering into an ordinary narrative.

Goya developed the etching and burnished aquatint around 1815–19; the Metropolitan Museum identifies this impression with a private printing around 1854. The Disparates invite interpretation through unexpected gestures and dreamlike encounters. Here, the contrast between the title Loyalty and the uneasy group leaves the relationship among the figures deliberately open.
