Description

In Cruel Folly, Francisco Goya stages a sudden attack amid a group of apparently distracted people. An enraged man wields a long weapon above a fallen figure, whose face records pain and alarm. Nearby bodies turn in uncertain directions, while a damaged wall frames the setting. The violent gesture is clear, but the surrounding group does not provide an equally clear account of what has provoked it.

Created around 1815–1819 for the Disparates and published in 1864, the print turns human cruelty into an unresolved, dreamlike encounter. Goya brings the action close, making the attacker and victim physically immediate while leaving motives obscure. Pale figures stand against an aquatint night, and the broken architecture adds to the instability. The image’s force lies in this imbalance between visible violence and uncertain explanation.
