Description

A kneeling man receives a crown amid a gathering of drinkers in A False Bacchus Crowning Drunkards. The mythological premise becomes an earthy social encounter, with the act of crowning linking the central ceremony to the people gathered around it. The image’s humor comes from the meeting of grand ritual and ordinary human appetite.

In this 1778 etching, Goya responds to a composition by Velázquez rather than presenting an independently invented scene. His printed interpretation brings the painting’s figures into a world of lines and carefully separated tones. The encounter remains engaging through the contrast between its classical premise and the immediacy of the gathered people, allowing an apparently grand subject to retain the directness and warmth of everyday companionship.
