Description
Rêverie captures a moment suspended between reading and daydreaming. Alphonse Mucha’s seated figure rests a hand upon an open book, her gaze drifting beyond the page. Flowers crown her hair, while curving stems and an intricate circular backdrop surround her with the gentle rhythm of Art Nouveau.
The design originated in the late 1890s in connection with the Paris printer F. Champenois and its 1898 calendar. Its appeal soon extended beyond advertising: the magazine La Plume issued the image as a decorative panel. This presentation uses the version without the printer’s advertising inscription, allowing the figure and ornament to take center stage.
The French title Rêverie means daydream, an apt description of the work’s unhurried mood. Soft greens, warm cream and pink blossoms flow through the design, balanced by crisp outlines and the elaborate pattern of the woman’s dress. It is an inviting image for anyone drawn to botanical detail, graceful line and the decorative elegance of turn-of-the-century Paris.
