Description
Autumn from Alphonse Mucha’s 1896 series The Seasons personifies the season through a graceful figure surrounded by curling vines and richly colored leaves. She reaches toward a cluster of grapes while holding a shallow bowl, her flowing hair and drapery woven into the decorative rhythm of the composition.
Warm russet, gold and muted green give the panel its harvest mood. The rounded border and sinuous outlines bring the figure and surrounding foliage together into one continuous design. In this color lithograph, printed by F. Champenois in Paris, Autumn becomes an image of abundance, poised between natural detail and the flowing elegance of Art Nouveau.
