Description
Seven circular wreaths fill a dark round field, joined by a continuous network of pale interlacing lines. Four ornamental corner pieces extend the design beyond the central circle, bringing curling tendrils and compact knots into the rectangular sheet. The pattern invites the eye to follow individual strands while repeatedly drawing it back toward the center.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer follows an ornamental design associated with Leonardo da Vinci. Its visual interest comes from the meeting of strict organization and seemingly endless movement: wreaths provide a clear structure, while the threads weave over and under one another in intricate paths. The strong contrast between the dark ground and the fine light lines makes the design both immediately striking and rewarding to examine closely.
