Description
The Last Supper by Albrecht Dürer gathers Christ and the apostles around a long table in a spare, ordered interior. A circular opening above the group gives the room a striking center, while the figures’ varied poses create a sequence of conversations and responses. Broad areas of light make the table and gathered garments unusually clear.
In this 1523 woodcut, the simplicity of the architecture brings the human gathering forward. Strong lines establish the room, yet the gestures keep it from feeling rigid or impersonal. The contrast between the calm setting and the movement among the companions gives the familiar biblical subject a quietly attentive character, inviting the eye to travel from one face and posture to another.
