Description
Justice appears as a seated figure astride a lion, holding an upright sword in one hand and suspended scales in the other. A radiant halo surrounds the head, while a heavy robe falls across the lap and the animal’s broad back. The lion looks outward with a stern expression, giving the emblem of judgment a powerful living presence.
Albrecht Dürer’s engraving combines human authority, animal strength and carefully balanced objects. The sword creates a sharp vertical line, while the scales hang delicately beside the robe’s deep folds. Rather than placing the figure within a narrative setting, the composition gathers its meaning through these contrasts, making an abstract idea compelling through weight, poise and the watchful character of the lion.
