Description
Saint Jerome kneels in a rocky wilderness, holding a stone as he turns toward a small crucifix. His lion rests beside him, while trees, a cave-like opening and distant buildings extend the setting behind. The bare upper body contrasts with the cloth gathered around his knees, giving the act of penitence a direct physical presence.
This engraving after Albrecht Dürer’s design places spiritual reflection within an intricately observed landscape. The saint’s bent body and the lion’s resting pose create a quiet foreground, while the irregular rock formations carry the eye deeper into the scene. Fine lines distinguish grass, foliage and stone. The image combines solitude with an inhabited world beyond, making the wilderness feel like a chosen place of attention rather than an empty retreat.
