Description

Virgin on the Crescent with Scepter and Starry Crown shows Mary standing on the moon and holding the child beneath a starry crown. A scepter and the long folds of her dress reinforce her upright form, while rays surround the pair like an opening field of light. Virgin on the Crescent with Scepter and Starry Crown joins the intimacy of mother and child with a vision of heavenly majesty.

The engraved lines bring remarkable variety to a restrained arrangement: soft faces, sharply described fabric and the luminous pattern around the figures each receive a distinct treatment. The curved moon provides a delicate foundation beneath the weight of the drapery. Rather than filling the image with a narrative crowd, the composition concentrates on a single radiant presence, allowing tenderness and authority to occupy the same small, carefully balanced space.
