Description
Jan Cornelis Sylvius is a 1633 etching by Rembrandt van Rijn portraying the Dutch sitter named in its title. The figure turns toward the viewer in dark clerical dress, with a long beard and light collar. Close etched lines build a deep shadow behind him and bring the face into relief.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds this impression of Jan Cornelis Sylvius. Its aged sheet retains visible toning and small marks, while the portrait’s features and etched detail remain clear.
