Description
A bound, blindfolded man stands amid execution victims in And There Is No Help. His upright body remains exposed within a setting already marked by death, while the title removes the promise of rescue. Goya makes the distance between the need for assistance and its absence immediately visible through a person unable to protect himself.
Goya’s etched design uses several forms of plate work to give the event a dense and immediate presence. The series examines conflict through particular people rather than a reassuring narrative of victory, and this image carries that approach with special severity. It remains compelling because the viewer is made to attend to a scene whose outcome cannot be softened by a hopeful explanation, leaving witnessing as the response still available.
