Peter and John Healing the Cripple at the Gate of the Temple

Description

Peter and John Healing the Cripple at the Gate of the Temple is Rembrandt van Rijn’s 1659 interpretation of an episode from the Acts of the Apostles. The subject centers on the encounter between the two apostles and a man seeking help at the temple entrance. The miracle gives the scene its meaning, while the meeting of the figures gives it a human focus.

The temple gate establishes a threshold between public space and sacred architecture. Rembrandt’s varied linework and tonal contrasts create depth around the encounter, allowing the biblical narrative to unfold within a larger setting. The work combines etching and drypoint with other tonal techniques. Its drama comes from the relationship between compassion, need and faith, expressed through a moment of direct contact.
