Description
Divers Trophées builds its composition around a magnificent helmet crowned by a lion and a tall plume. Winged creatures, decorated shields, and overlapping weapons spread outward in an intricate fan. Carefully engraved highlights make the imagined metalwork glow against the dark recesses, while a curved inscription anchors the arrangement below.
Georges Tournier made this 1651 engraving from Charles Errard’s drawings after Polidoro da Caravaggio’s Palazzo Milesi decorations in Rome. The symmetry is enriched by small differences in every shield and ornament, rewarding a close look at this fantastical vision of antique armor.
