Description

Frieze with Male Figures and Two Horses, after Polidoro da Caravaggio, arranges people and animals in a procession-like composition. Brown ink and wash give the figures a relief-like weight, recalling the sculptural rhythms of ancient Roman monuments.

The mid-sixteenth-century drawing copies part of a painted façade at Rome’s Casa Boniauguri. Its subject belongs to the story of Tarquinius and the augur Attus, and the sheet helps preserve the appearance of a lost decorative painting.
