Description
Studies of the Virgin Enthroned and accompanying figures occupy the upper part of this working sheet by Polidoro da Caravaggio. Looser standing figure studies spread below and along the edge, allowing separate ideas to share the page. Dated 1530–35, the drawing uses pen and brown ink with brush and wash. It preserves the search for a coherent sacred gathering rather than the fully resolved surface of an altarpiece.
The sheet also carries other studies on its reverse, some tentatively associated with a Deposition, but those belong to a separate view. The represented side preserves the working character of an idea rather than the fixed surface of an altarpiece. Lines and darker accents allow the arrangement to be considered without completing every surrounding detail. The drawing brings the viewer close to the decisions through which a religious scene acquires order and a human focus.
