Description
Study of a Ballet Dancer seen from the Back by Edgar Degas traces a dancer’s raised arm, turned head and wide skirt with spare black-chalk lines. The faded pink paper gives the figure a warm setting, and the lightly drawn contours leave the pose open and fluid.
Dated tentatively to 1875, the study concentrates on the relationship between the dancer’s back, shoulder and lifted hand. Its quiet economy invites attention to a small, expressive movement.
