Description
Goya’s What a sacrifice is anticipated in this reversed reproduction of the Sueño drawing prepared for plate 14 of Los Caprichos. A young woman stands amid a cluster of men, their contrasting faces and postures turning the gathering into a pointed social scene.
Catalogued as a heliogravure after Francisco Goya, with traces of green watercolor, the work preserves the drawing’s sharp contrasts of youth, age and self-interest. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates this reproduction tentatively to about 1830–50. The composition’s compressed figures and expressive faces keep attention on the unequal bargain suggested by its title.
