Description
Gardener by an Apple Tree pairs a bent worker with the twisting branches of a bare tree. Low buildings stretch across the distance, while energetic marks bind the figure, soil and orchard into a single scene of daily labor.
Vincent van Gogh gives the gardener’s task a quiet gravity through the strong curve of the back and the weight of the spade. The lively network of dark strokes moves between delicate branches and dense clothing, finding expressive rhythm in an ordinary rural moment.
