Description

Ballet Class, The Dance Hall brings the quiet work of rehearsal into a room glowing with yellow walls and pale costumes. At the left, dancers lift their arms and extend a leg across the open floor, their movements echoed in the mirror behind them. An instructor watches nearby, while a seated woman reads in the foreground. Edgar Degas makes these different kinds of attention part of the same scene: practice continues alongside waiting, observation and everyday distraction.

Painted in 1880–81, the work belongs to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where it is titled The Ballet Class. Its setting draws on the rehearsal rooms of the Paris Opéra, a world Degas studied closely. Rather than showing a finished stage performance, he gives the preparation its own visual richness. The broad floor separates the practicing dancers from the nearer figures, while repeated pale skirts and warm ribbons connect them across the room.
