Description
In Édouard Manet Seated, Right Profile, Edgar Degas makes another artist the subject of a concentrated drawing. Manet appears seated and facing right, his face and body lightly developed across the sheet. The chosen viewpoint gives particular importance to the outline of the head and the relationship between face and posture. A portrait emerges without the elaborate setting or polished finish of a public likeness.
Degas made this black-chalk study around 1868 on paper that was originally pink. Its directness brings attention to the practical decisions of drawing: where a contour should be firm, where a form needs shading, and where the sheet can remain open. Manet is the sitter, not the maker of the work. The image records an artist looking closely at a fellow painter, with the quiet intimacy that a modest drawing can preserve.
