Description
Vincent van Gogh’s Garden at Arles fills the canvas with an abundance of bright flowers and lively foliage. A pale path winds through patches of red, yellow, blue, and green, while darker trees rise beyond the garden beds. Low buildings and a boundary wall hold the colorful growth within a recognizable outdoor space.
Painted in July 1888, the scene reflects Van Gogh’s response to the strong colors of southern France. Separate strokes keep each hue active, giving the garden a rhythmic, almost flickering surface. The painting balances the order of paths and beds with the exuberance of plants in bloom.
