Description
Irises by Vincent van Gogh brings a close patch of garden into a vivid arrangement of flowers, leaves and earth. Blue-violet blooms rise among curling green blades, while a single pale iris stands apart on the left. Strong outlines give each flower its own shape, and the cropped view lets the plants seem to continue beyond the picture.
Painted from the garden at Saint-Rémy in May 1889, this is the outdoor composition now held by the Getty, distinct from Van Gogh’s later vases of irises. The repeated stems create a lively pattern without making the flowers identical. Broad areas of color and the varied turns of the petals balance decorative rhythm with close attention to growing plants.
