Description
Umberto Boccioni’s The City Rises sends a powerful red horse through a dense field of laboring figures and sweeping marks. Pale blue and white passages cross the warm central forms, while buildings and vertical structures appear in the distance. The entire surface seems in motion.
Painted in 1910, the work makes urban activity feel energetic and unstable. Bodies, animals, and surroundings overlap rather than remaining neatly separate. Boccioni uses repeated diagonals and streaked color to convey effort and movement across the growing city.
