Description
Umberto Boccioni’s Modern Idol presents a woman’s face amid the brilliance and agitation of a modern night scene. A broad hat decorated with flowers catches intense yellow and red accents, while surrounding streaks of light create a restless atmosphere. Violet shadows and rapid marks make the figure appear immersed in the spectacle around her.
Painted in 1911, the work brings portraiture into the energetic world of Futurism. Light and color seem to act upon the figure, dissolving firm boundaries and suggesting the excitement of urban life. The close view gives the face a striking presence within the painting’s turbulent surface.
