Description
Pablo Picasso’s Woman in a Chemise in an Armchair combines a seated figure with bold, interlocking areas of orange, brown, green, and purple. A raised arm, fragments of a newspaper, and folds of pale clothing remain visible within the simplified shapes. The armchair provides a curved frame around the body.
The painting belongs to Picasso’s exploration of Synthetic Cubism. Instead of breaking the figure into many small facets, he builds the image from larger forms that fit together like a deliberate construction. The contrast between patterned details and broad color areas gives the portrait both wit and a strong decorative rhythm.
