Description

In Three Intoxicated Courtesans, figures stagger or lean within a room as companions assist them, their long robes extending across the wide interior. Lattice and window structures give the active group a shared setting. Kitagawa Utamaro makes the intoxicated condition named in the title part of a human encounter, allowing the figures’ differing positions to carry the scene without imposing a judgment on their behavior.

The work dates to the 1790s and is catalogued as a triptych of woodblock prints in ink and color on paper. Its multi-sheet form gives several figures a shared visual space. The image invites attention to a temporary state preserved in a lasting arrangement, allowing the courtesans’ encounter to remain central without turning the scene into a moral judgment or speculative narrative.
