Description
Ichikawa Monnosuke II portrays Soga Jūrō Sukenari in a standing pose, wearing a green robe with swords at his side. The restrained arrangement gives costume and weapons a clear place in the actor’s presentation. Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait brings a named performer and a named role together, making the warrior’s identity a particular act of theatrical interpretation rather than an anonymous figure.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print dates to the second month of 1785. Made with ink and color on paper, it gives the theatrical encounter a lasting form outside the immediate setting of the stage. The image rewards attention to the relationship between identity and interpretation, where the role is made present through one named performer rather than treated as an impersonal illustration.
