Description
Nakamura Nakazō I appears as the elderly samurai Hige no Ikyū, wearing a dark robe whose colored lining and patterned hem sharpen the figure’s presence. The bearded face and deliberate posture give the character a commanding air within a narrow architectural setting. Katsukawa Shunshō keeps the focus on the actor, allowing costume, expression and a few carefully placed gestures to carry the scene.
Made in the fifth month of 1782, this design is the middle sheet of a theatrical triptych. Ikyū belongs to the Sukeroku dramas, where his wealth and self-importance place him in conflict with a younger rival. Shunshō makes that stage identity visible without turning the portrait into a complete narrative. The figure’s studied dignity gives the image its fascination, leaving room to sense the vanity beneath the character’s outward authority.
