Description

In this portrait of Segawa Kikunojō III as an oiran, Katsukawa Shunshō gives the courtesan role a tall, elegant presence. A screen and tree shape the surrounding space, placing the figure within a setting that supports the theatrical persona. The elongated silhouette makes the costume’s movement central to the image, while the named actor remains visible through the identity he assumes.

Dated around 1780, the ink-and-color woodblock print belongs to Edo-period Japan. The portrait makes the distinction between performer and character especially important: Kikunojō’s name anchors the work to the stage even as the role asks the viewer to accept a different persona. Shunshō records that act of transformation in a durable image, allowing a particular performance identity to remain present beyond the theater.
