Description
Yamashita Kinsaku II turns in an elaborate pale patterned costume and hat against a near-black background. The contrast gives the garment and the actor’s angled presence a clear emphasis within the narrow sheet. Katsukawa Shunshō portrays a female role without securely naming the character, keeping the identified performer at the center of an encounter shaped by costume and posture.
Dating to around 1778, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It preserves a theatrical person in a form that can be revisited beyond the immediate performance. The work invites attention to that continuing meeting with the actor, allowing the particular name to give the portrayal meaning without requiring a speculative play identification or a reconstructed scene around the figure.
