Description

Azuma Tōzō III appears in a female role in this print by Katsukawa Shunshō, the black kimono giving the represented figure a distinct identity. The tall figure raises one hand near the face beside a fence, with a dark upper robe above a light, reddish patterned hem. The garment’s long downward movement gives weight to the small gesture, joining the character’s composure to a clear vertical presence.

Probably made in 1782, the nishiki-e woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Its interest lies in the meeting of the actor’s identity and the feminine guise, allowing the viewer to recognize both at once. The dark garment is part of that representation, carrying the appearance of the character while leaving its wider dramatic meaning open. Shunshō preserves a particular theatrical encounter in which clothing helps make a role visible.
