Description
Nakamura Nakazō appears as Ono Sadakurō in Katsukawa Shunshō’s print, giving a named dramatic character the presence of a particular performer. The actor bends his knees beneath a broad yellow umbrella, with sharp contrasts between black and white clothing. Hands gather near the face and umbrella shaft, giving the sheltered figure a concentrated energy and making the body’s position feel dramatically alert.
Created around 1766, the nishiki-e woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. Shunshō turns a performed appearance into a lasting encounter, allowing the association between Nakazō and Sadakurō to survive beyond the stage. The work’s appeal lies in that act of recognition, where a character is not merely illustrated but embodied by an actor. It offers a particular interpretation rather than an anonymous image detached from the circumstances of performance.
