Description
Nakamura Sukegorō II appears as Kaminari Shōkurō in one sheet of a five-part composition by Katsukawa Shunshō. The standing actor wears a black robe with red accents at the neck and waist, while a blade angles downward. The restrained body and the weapon’s direction create a poised tension, making the figure’s presence feel controlled yet capable of action.
Dated to the second month of 1780, the sheet is a nishiki-e woodblock print made with ink and color on paper. The pentaptych format gives the original composition an extended field, while this portion focuses attention on Sukegorō’s role. Shunshō’s image invites recognition at two levels: the performer can be considered closely, and his character remains connected to a larger dramatic arrangement. That relationship keeps the panel intimate without making it wholly self-contained.
