Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears second from the right among four actors standing before an entrance, their deep green garments and red accents giving the scene a strong visual unity. Differences in stance and expression keep the figures distinct, while the repeated costume colors make their shared appearance feel ceremonial and confidently theatrical.
The 1780 design presents a scene of chivalrous commoners from A Soga Drama on the First Festival Day. These stage figures represented street defenders of ordinary people, and their costumes combined role emblems with the performers’ family crests. Shunshō balances that group identity with the individuality of each pose. The result is an engaging ensemble image in which repetition strengthens, rather than erases, the presence of the people within it.
