Description
Ichikawa Danjūrō V appears in Shibaraku, standing with feet apart beneath a broad red costume whose angular shoulders create an emphatic silhouette. A sword extends to the right, continuing the outward reach of the garment. Katsukawa Shunshō makes actor, weapon and costume part of a single theatrical presence, giving the named role force through the performer’s presentation.
Dating to around 1781, the color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. The subject can be considered beyond the time of its performance, where costume, actor and sword remain available to close attention. Its interest lies in the particular portrayal, allowing the named role to carry the encounter without expanding the drawn weapon into an unsupported description of a specific action.
