Description
Nakamura Sukegorō II takes the role of Gokumon no Shōbei in this actor print by Katsukawa Shunshō. The actor plants his feet widely beneath a patterned curtain of gold medallions, with a long implement rising to the right. The green ground anchors the stance, allowing the figure’s breadth and the surrounding decoration to give the scene a concentrated dramatic force.
Dated to the second month of 1771, the nishiki-e print was produced with ink and color on paper. Shunshō preserves a particular appearance within Sukegorō’s stage career, allowing it to be considered beyond the circumstances of the performance. The work’s interest lies in that specificity: a role acquires its visible form through one actor’s embodiment. Character and performer remain distinct, yet the image gives their meeting a durable and individual presence.
